Choosing a push button switch usually starts with a simple question:

What does the switch need to do?

The answer depends on the machine, the control circuit, the installation environment and the way the operator will use the button.

A switch that works well on one machine may not be the right choice for another.

Start With the Mounting Size

Before looking at the button style, check the panel.

What size is the mounting hole?

Common push button sizes include 16mm, 19mm, 22mm and 30mm.

If you are designing a new panel, check the product drawing before making the hole. If you are replacing an existing button, measure the current cutout first.

This can save a lot of trouble later.

The outside diameter of the button is not necessarily the same as the panel cutout. The mounting thread, nut, sealing ring and panel thickness also need to match.

What Should the Button Do?

Next, look at the operation.

If the button should work only while it is being pressed, you will normally need a momentary push button.

If the button needs to stay in its position after pressing, a latching push button may be more suitable.

These two switches can look almost the same from the front.

The difference is inside the mechanism.

For a new machine, it is better to confirm the required switching function from the electrical design before ordering.

Check NO and NC Contacts

The contact arrangement is another important point.

Other contact combinations

NO means normally open.

NC means normally closed.

Which one you need depends on the control circuit.

If you are replacing an existing switch, check the original wiring or electrical drawing rather than guessing from the appearance of the old button.

Check the Electrical Rating

The voltage and current rating of the push button should match the circuit in which it is being used.

A push button may be used to control a relay, contactor or PLC input rather than switching the main load directly.

So the first thing to find out is:

What is the button actually switching?

Then check the rated voltage and current of the selected model.

This is especially important when a buyer is comparing different push button switches that look similar but have different electrical specifications.

Consider Where the Button Will Be Installed

The working environment makes a difference.

A button installed inside a control cabinet may have very different requirements from one mounted on outdoor equipment.

Think about the actual conditions:

Dust

Water

Oil

Cleaning

Vibration

Mechanical impact

Temperature

Frequent operation

This is where IP and IK ratings become useful.

For example, some ONPOW push button models are available with IP65, IP67 or higher protection depending on the series and configuration.

But an IP rating should not be looked at by itself.

The panel cutout, sealing method, mounting condition and enclosure design can all affect the final protection of the installation.

Metal or Plastic?

This is another choice that depends on the machine.

Metal push buttons are commonly used on industrial machinery, control panels and equipment where a solid front-panel component is preferred.

Plastic buttons can be a practical option when weight, cost or the design of the equipment is more important.

Stainless steel, aluminium and different plastic materials can also be available depending on the product series.

There is no reason to choose a metal button simply because it is more expensive.

Choose the material that fits the environment and the equipment.

Do You Need an Illuminated Button?

If the operator needs to see a machine status quickly, an illuminated push button can be useful.

Before ordering one, check the LED requirements separately from the switching function.

For example:

LED color

LED voltage

Illumination type

Terminal configuration

Red, green, blue, yellow and white are common choices.

24V DC is also widely used in industrial control systems, but the LED voltage should always match the actual circuit.

Check the Space Behind the Panel

This is easy to miss during the initial design.

The front of the button may fit perfectly while the rear body has nowhere to go.

Check the available space behind the panel for the switch body, contact blocks, terminals and wiring.

This matters even more when several buttons are installed close together.

Look for anything that may interfere with the switch:

DIN rails

Cable ducts

PCBs

Contactors

Connectors

Other switches

Internal enclosure parts

A mechanical drawing is much more useful here than a product photo.

What Certifications Do You Need?

The certification requirement usually depends on the market and the equipment.

Depending on the project, buyers may ask for CE, UL, VDE, CCC, RoHS or other requirements.

One point worth checking is whether the certification applies to the exact model and configuration you are ordering.

Do not assume that every product in the same series has exactly the same certification.

For OEM projects, it is better to confirm this before the product is added to the BOM.

Think About How Often the Button Will Be Used

Operating frequency is worth considering as well.

A button on a machine used occasionally has different requirements from a button pressed hundreds of times every day.

Check the mechanical life and electrical life specified for the product.

Also look at the conditions under which the electrical life is measured. The rated life can depend on the load, voltage and switching conditions.

Don't Forget the Connection

Finally, check how the button will be wired.

Depending on the model, there may be different terminal options, such as pin terminals, screw terminals, solder terminals or connector-based designs.

For an OEM machine, the terminal type can affect assembly time and the amount of space needed behind the panel.

It is a small detail, but it is better to decide it before production starts.

If you are asking a push button manufacturer for a recommendation, you do not need a complicated specification sheet.

Choosing the Right Push Button Starts With the Application

There is no single push button that works for every machine.

A compact automation device may need a small 16mm button.

A standard industrial control panel may use 22mm.

A larger machine interface may call for a 30mm button.

An outdoor application may need stronger protection.

A machine with frequent operator input may require a different mechanical and electrical life specification.
