What Certifications Should a Push Button Switch Have?
When we discuss push button switches with customers, certification is usually one of the first things they ask about.
"Do you have UL?"
"What about VDE?"
"Is it TÜV certified?"
"Can we use it for a machine sold in Europe?"
These are all reasonable questions. But there is no single certification that every push button switch needs.
The requirement depends mainly on where the equipment will be sold, what the equipment is, and what the end customer requires.
That is usually where we start at ONPOW.
CE, UL, VDE and TÜV Are Not the Same Thing
It is common to see CE, UL, VDE and TÜV listed together on a push button manufacturer's website.
For a buyer, however, these marks should not simply be treated as a list of "quality certificates."
They have different meanings and may be related to different regulations, standards, testing or certification requirements.
CE for the European Market
CE marking is related to applicable European Union legislation.
For an equipment manufacturer selling a machine in Europe, the compliance requirements normally need to be considered for the complete machine or equipment.
The push button may be one of the components used in that equipment.
So when a customer asks us for a "CE push button," we normally want to know more about the final application rather than treating CE as the only selection criterion.
UL for the US Market
UL is widely recognized in the United States and is often requested for industrial equipment, control panels and machinery intended for the North American market.
However, the exact requirement can vary.
Some projects may require a particular UL certification or recognized component, while others may have different requirements based on the equipment and applicable standards.
If UL is specified in the customer's BOM or technical documentation, we recommend checking the exact product and certification rather than relying on a general statement such as "UL available."
VDE and the German Market
VDE is particularly familiar to customers in Germany and the European electrical industry.
For some German industrial projects, the customer may specifically request VDE-related certification or testing.
This is why German customers sometimes ask about VDE before discussing other product details.
If VDE is a project requirement, the important thing is to confirm which ONPOW model is covered and what documentation is available for that model.
TÜV
TÜV organizations are well known for testing, inspection and certification.
When a customer says, "We need TÜV," we normally ask what the end customer or project specification actually requires.
The specific TÜV certificate, standard, product model and scope are more useful than simply putting "TÜV certified" on a quotation.
For an engineering project, the paperwork needs to match the actual component.
What About RoHS?
RoHS is another requirement that frequently appears in push button specifications.
It is related to restrictions on certain hazardous substances in electrical and electronic equipment.
For many international customers, RoHS compliance is part of their purchasing requirements.
It is useful to distinguish this from certifications such as UL or VDE because they address different requirements.
When customers ask for RoHS documentation, we normally confirm the relevant product and material information for the order.
Does a Push Button Need All of These?
Usually, no.
A push button does not automatically need CE, UL, VDE, TÜV and CCC at the same time.
For example, the requirements for a machine sold in Germany may be different from those for a machine shipped to the United States.
And two customers buying the same type of button may still have different requirements because their end users use different specifications.
This is why we don't recommend choosing a button by counting certification marks.
More certificates do not automatically mean the button is better for your machine.
The important question is whether the product meets the requirements of your project.
Confirm Certification Before You Finalize the BOM
This is one of the practical issues we see with OEM projects.
A machine manufacturer may have already completed the panel design and BOM when the end customer asks for a specific certification.
At that point, changing the push button is no longer just a purchasing issue.
It can affect the panel drawing, wiring, mounting dimensions and documentation.
Sometimes the replacement button even has a different body length or terminal arrangement.
It is much easier to confirm the certification requirement before the component is locked into the design.
For this reason, when customers contact ONPOW for OEM projects, we prefer to know the target market and certification requirement at the beginning.
Don't Look at the Certificate and Forget the Button
Certification is important, but it is not enough to choose a push button.
We have seen customers start with:
"I need a UL push button."
After checking the application, we still need to know:
What is the panel cutout?
Momentary or latching?
NO or NC?
What voltage?
What current?
Illuminated or non-illuminated?
What IP rating?
What material?
How much space is available behind the panel?
A UL-certified button that does not fit the panel or does not have the required contact configuration is still the wrong button.
The same applies to VDE, TÜV or other certification requirements.
The Exact Model Matters
This is something buyers should pay attention to when comparing suppliers.
A manufacturer may have several product series, and the certification may not apply to every model in exactly the same way.
It can depend on the product construction, contact configuration, electrical rating or other details.
So if certification is important to your project, ask the supplier for the documentation corresponding to the exact model you intend to purchase.
That is much safer than relying on a general certification statement on a website.

This gives the manufacturer enough information to start checking the right product.
If you already have a drawing, BOM or existing switch model, that is even better.
The Right Certification Depends on the Machine
There is no need to choose a push button simply because its product page shows the longest list of certification marks.
Start with the destination market.
Then check the machine requirements.
Then confirm the applicable certification or compliance requirement.
After that, select the push button according to the mechanical, electrical and environmental conditions.
