30 Years of Making Push Button Switches: What Experience Really Brings to Customers
A company can say it has been making push buttons for more than 30 years. But for a customer, the more important question is what those years have actually added to the product.
ONPOW started manufacturing push button switches in 1988.
Since then, machines have changed, production methods have changed, and customer requirements have changed. Buttons are now used on automated production lines, CNC equipment, AGVs, robots, charging equipment and many other types of industrial machinery.
The button itself may still look small and simple. Making it well is not quite as simple.
It Starts with Understanding the Product
A push button is made up of many small parts.
The housing, button, spring, contacts, terminals and sealing components all affect the final product. The choice of material and the way the parts are assembled can also affect how the switch feels, how long it lasts and how it performs in different environments.
Much of this knowledge does not come from a product catalog.
It comes from making the product.
Over the years, ONPOW has developed and produced many different types of push button switches. Problems found during development, production or customer use have all become part of that experience.
That experience is useful when a new product is being developed, but it is equally useful when a customer needs an existing product to be produced consistently for a long time.
The Tooling Behind the Product
For a push button manufacturer, molds are an important part of the business.
ONPOW has more than 1,500 sets of molds accumulated through years of product development and manufacturing.
This gives our engineers and production teams experience with different product structures, materials and manufacturing requirements.
It also becomes important when customers need something outside the standard catalog.
A customer may have a drawing or an existing sample and need a different mounting size, housing, button shape or internal structure.
In that situation, having experience with tooling makes the discussion much more practical. We can look at the design, consider how it should be manufactured and work through the details before production starts.
Mass Production Is Different from Making Samples
A sample can look good and work well.
The real test comes when the same product needs to be made hundreds or thousands of times.
This is where production experience matters.
Materials have to remain stable. Molds need to be maintained properly. Components need to fit together consistently. Assembly and inspection need to follow the same requirements from one batch to the next.
For a machine manufacturer, this consistency is important.
A switch that performs well in the first sample but varies during mass production is not a good solution for a long-term project.
This is one reason we pay attention not only to product development, but also to the production process behind it.
Customers Are Asking More Detailed Questions
The questions we receive from customers have also changed over the years.
A buyer may once have simply asked about the size and price of a switch.
Today, it is common to discuss mechanical life, electrical ratings, IP protection, materials, LED options, contact configurations, certifications and operating conditions.
Some customers need a standard product.
Others are designing a machine around a particular switch and need changes to the product.
For an OEM project, the discussion can start with a drawing, a sample or even a description of how the switch will be used.
That means a push button supplier needs to understand more than the product itself.
We need to understand the application.
Product Development Does Not Stop
Thirty years in the industry does not mean using the same products for 30 years.
Industrial equipment continues to change, and switches need to keep up with those changes.
ONPOW has developed around 40 product series and accumulated more than 70 patents.
Our range includes metal and plastic push buttons, illuminated switches, emergency stop switches, selector switches, key lock switches, piezo switches, touch switches, indicator lights and other control components.
Some products are designed for general control applications. Others are developed for more specific requirements.
New products and product improvements are part of the normal work of the factory.
Testing Has to Match the Application
Different switches can have very different working conditions.
A button installed inside a control cabinet does not necessarily need the same protection or testing as a switch used outdoors.
An emergency stop switch has different requirements from a standard illuminated push button.
Customers may therefore ask about electrical performance, mechanical operation, durability, illumination, waterproof performance and other characteristics.
The important thing is not simply to have a long list of tests.
The testing needs to make sense for the product and the way it will be used.
This is something that becomes clearer after many years of working with different products and applications.
Certifications Are Part of the Process
For international customers, product certification is often discussed before an order is placed.
Depending on the product and market, customers may require CE, UL, VDE, CCC, RoHS or other compliance information.
ONPOW has established ISO9001, ISO14001 and ISO45001 management systems. Our products also include certifications such as UL, VDE, CCC and CE according to the applicable product requirements.
For equipment manufacturers, having the right documents available early in the project can make supplier approval and product development easier.
So, What Does More Than 30 Years Really Mean?
It does not simply mean that a company has been around for a long time.
For a manufacturer, experience is built into many parts of the business.
It is in the mold that has been developed and used for years.
It is in knowing which details can affect assembly.
It is in understanding why a product that works well in a sample may behave differently in mass production.
It is in knowing how to deal with a customer's drawing or sample.
It is in understanding which specifications matter in a particular application.
And it is in being able to continue producing the same product when a customer's machine enters long-term production.
For us, that is the real value of manufacturing experience.
More Than a Number
ONPOW has been manufacturing push button switches since 1988.
Today, we have around 40 product series, more than 1,500 sets of molds and more than 70 patents, supported by our product development, manufacturing and quality control capabilities.
But numbers alone do not make a good supplier.
Customers ultimately judge a manufacturer by the product they receive, the consistency of future orders and the support they get when a technical problem comes up.
That is why we continue to invest in product development, tooling, production and testing.
The industry will continue to change.
The machines will become more automated, control systems will become more sophisticated, and customers will have new requirements.
